What is asbestos?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that has been widely used in various industries because of its heat resistance, durability and insulating properties. It has been used in building materials such as insulation, roofing, pipes and cement.

What makes asbestos potentially dangerous is its fibrous structure. When asbestos is disturbed by operations such as grinding or drilling or during removal, microscopic fibers can be released into the air. These fibers can easily be inhaled and enter the lungs, leading to various health problems. And the tricky part is that asbestos cannot be recognized by the naked eye.

Exposure to asbestos fibers has been linked to serious health conditions, including asbestosis, lung cancer, mesothelioma (a rare and aggressive form of cancer that affects the pleura, abdominal cavity or heart) and other respiratory diseases. These health risks led to the banning or strict regulation of asbestos.

Because of its widespread use in the past, asbestos can still be found in older buildings. Therefore, proper precautions and safety measures are necessary when handling or working with materials suspected of containing asbestos. It goes without saying that you should not embark on this yourself, but have this risky work performed by a licensed asbestos removal contractor.
