What is a joist?

A joist is a beam used as a load-bearing element in construction. It is often used to create large openings in walls or floors, such as door and window openings. Joists are also used to provide additional support for structural walls, such as when a (bearing) wall is removed to create an open space.

Depending on the length and application, different materials can be used: wood, reinforced concrete or steel. Wood joists are found in roof structures and in older homes to support the top floor. To support large open spaces, steel or reinforced concrete is usually used.
We will always use the proper joist when structurally remodeling a space to provide you with maximum safety and stability.
